Gem Barley
Gem Barley is Alva’s other close friend, alongside Cosmo. She is the same age, with shoulder-length hair that she usually ties back. Gem is roughly the same height as Kay, the main character, and has a round, youthful face, pointed ears, and damselfly wings.
Fair-minded and realistic in her outlook, Gem approaches situations with a level head. Kay and Rob meet her in the first book, while Kay gets to know her better in the second book. Alongside Alva, Gem is also close friends with Cosmo Pollen, another Ever Nympha of their age, and the three attend school together.
In Beyond the Onyx Mountains, Gem and Cosmo attend an outdoor celebration with Kay, Rob, Alva, and Alva’s mother, Jasmine. During the event, Rob is kidnapped, and Gem and Cosmo are promptly taken home by their parents. Kay does not see them again until the following book.
